I use hitfilm 4 it is the only free video editor I've found that didn't lack features or have some kind of gimmick to buy the pro version. Just make an account here https://hitfilm.com/account then download from here https://hitfilm.com/express/verify?id=5727746666c4875f5c67dc8f and when the program starts you login with your account.

I was trained on Premier (obviously not free) but the closest I've found to it was Cinelerra (Linux only unfortunately).  For Windows there are a few passable ones.
